The Sisterhood of the Traveling Sock

Are you familiar with the movie, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Jeans", that is based on the book, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, a series of five bestselling young adult novels? The novels tell the continuing story of four young girls who acquire a pair of magical jeans that fit all four of them perfectly, even though they're all different shapes and sizes and we get to see what is happening in the life of the young woman that is in possession of the pair of jeans. Utilizing that theme, Lee Thornton, has come up with a very creative way to grow a unit and at the same time be involved in mission work while doing an outreach project.

When the sock arrives at your local unit, something needs to happen. The Sock brings your unit creative wishes to start a new circle of at least two new members, a new outreach project that is close to the unit’s heart, or a new meeting format.  Meetings would not need to be monthly, but scheduled as needed to reach the needs of the unit’s outreach. Starting each meeting with a devotional is highly recommended.

Lee Thornton, Texas Conference VP says,   “ I am sure you are asking why you must have a sock visit you.  At 2011 Annual Conference, the speaker Dr. Adam Hamilton said that UMW has another 13 years before it ends.  I don’t believe that. United Methodist Women give 1/3 of the mission giving of the Church and if we end, what of the United Methodist Church and mission giving? Besides I don’t like someone telling me I can’t do it. So I suggest we “sock it to them” and show what we as United Methodist Women can do.”

There are many women in the local churches involved in mission outreach, but in this busy world their time is limited. They wish to do outreach. United Methodist Women can work with them to give them a place and include them in the UMW sisterhood.

When this sock arrives at your Church, welcome it! Start a new circle and send the story of the outreach project to Lee Thornton. Then after contacting Lee, please send the sock on its’ travels to another UMW unit.

This will be fun. Where will the sock go? What will it do? Will it continue its travels or stay as a stinky sock?

Our beginning was a small group focused on mission for women and children. This is who we are. This is who we must continue to be, United Methodist Women.
