Legislative Event

Five Texas Conferences come together annually in Austin for Legislative Event.  It is co-sponsored by Texas Impact, a faith based advocacy group in Austin and the Social Action Coordinators of the Texas conferences.  It is a time for presenting current issues, discussions with state representatives and a visit to the capitol building and legislators' offices.

.

Texas Conference was well represented at the annual Legislative event in Austin on January 22-24, 2012. We had 19 ladies attend and show their desire to be more involved with our legislature. Each lady had the opportunity to visit with a minimum of 3 legislators at the Capitol.

Texas Conference Priorities for 2012 are as follows:

1.                   Juvenile Justice – We want to be informed on the handling of juvenile offenders in our own county as to rehabilitation , mental health care, and education along with being aware of the district attorneys policy on charging juveniles as adults, and the school board's policy on citations for truancy and other offenses (leading to incarceration).

2.                  Campaign Finance – We want accountability and transparency in campaign donations and strengthening the Texas Ethics Commission.

3.                  Energy & Environment – We want reliable energy generation compatible with cost control and protection of air, land and water.

4.                  Payday Lending – We want continued monitoring of the payday lending industry for transparency of rates charged.

5.                  Immigration reform: We want continued monitoring of the progress of comprehensive immigration reform, staying ready to advocate in injustices such as as wage theft and human trafficking.
